Course Information
MED 2 NC Courses are conducted as scheduled.
Practical and On Board course components are conducted at venues in Geelong and aboard our 17 m training vessel “Delphinus”.

Course Date information.
The MED 2 NC Course includes an Elements of Shipboard Safety component which can be completed in one of our scheduled ESS Courses. See ESS Timetables

The MED 2 NC Course includes the following components:
- Engineering Knowledge
- Elements of Shipboard Safety (Liferafting and Firefighting)
Please note: The MED 2 NC qualification includes First Aid Unit of Competency “HLTAID011 Provide first aid”. As Marine Training Services does not offer a First Aid Course, this unit will need to be completed with another course provider.
Upon successfully completing all course requirements participants will receive a nationally recognised certificate of course completion for MAR30821 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal).
The MAR30821 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal) is a nationally accredited certificate recognised in all States and Territories in Australia.
Prerequisites
Course applicants are required to have a good command of spoken and written English, and be able to make mathematical calculations.
The course includes physical activities while on board the training vessel and during in-water activities in the Elements of Shipboard Safety component.
Please note: To achieve an AMSA MED 2 NC Certificate of Competency, individuals are required to meet health and eyesight requirements as detailed in AMSA’s Marine Order 505 Certificates of Competency available at https://www.amsa.gov.au/about/regulations-and-standards/marine-order-505-certificates-competency-national-law
Course Duration
The MED 2 NC Course has been designed to be completed as scheduled.
Online Component
The Theory for the follow course component can be completed Online or by Remote Learning:
- Engineering Knowledge.
Attendance is required for:
- Elements of Shipboard Safety; and,
- On board/Practical Tuition and Assessment; and,
- Supervised Written Assessments.
Practical Component
MED 2 NC Course participants are required to attend all course components. The practical components of the course include, but are not limited to:
- vessel operation exercises
- in-water liferafting and survival activities
- use of flares
- use of firefighting equipment

Certificate of Completion
The AMSA MED 2 (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2) NC Certificate of Competency (CoC) may allow the holder to perform the following duties:
- chief engineer on a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power <750 kW <EEZ
- chief engineer on a vessel with an outboard engine of unlimited propulsion power <EEZ
- second engineer on a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power <1500 kW <EEZ
- assist an engineer in any tasks that may be required on board while working under the general supervision of the person in charge of the vessel’s engines <EEZ
- work in the engine room of a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power <3000 kW <EEZ
To achieve an AMSA MED 2 NC CoC you are required to successfully complete the following:
- MAR30821 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal) Course
- AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA) (Assessed during course delivery and valid for 12 months)
- Sea Service
- First Aid (Unit HLTAID011 Provide first aid)
- AMSA Certificate of Competency Application Requirements
Marine Training Services does not offer a First Aid Course.
AMSA Certificate of Competency Application requirements include being at least 16 years old and meeting medical and eyesight requirements.
MED 2 NC Certificate of Competency Qualifying Sea Service
With AMSA approved task book
Either of the following:
(a) at least 180 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with inboard diesel propulsion power ≥150 kW;
(b) at least 90 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with inboard diesel propulsion power ≥150 kW while holding a workshop skills equivalent qualification.
Without AMSA approved task book:
Either of the following:
(a) at least 360 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with inboard diesel propulsion power ≥150 kW;
(b) at least 180 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with inboard diesel propulsion power ≥150 kW while holding a workshop skills equivalent qualification.
In each case the qualifying sea service must be completed while performing duties as a general purpose hand (whether certificated or not), an engineer, a marine engine driver, an assistant to a marine engine driver, an assistant to a chief engineer or second engineer.
