Theory components of our courses can be completed by Remote Learning at any time.
Theory components of scheduled courses may be conducted Online if COVID-19 restrictions do not allow face to face course delivery.
Remote Learning
The theory components of a course can be completed externally of the classroom by Remote Learning at any time.
Studying by Remote Learning means students can learn at their own pace – at home or on board a vessel, however, attendance is required for practical and on board components of courses.
Attendance is required for Practical and On Board components of courses which are conducted at venues in Geelong, including aboard our 17m Training Vessel Delphinus. Completion of assignments and assessments is required prior to booking in for some practical and on board assessments.
Remote Learners need to be self-motivated, disciplined and have time to allocate to regular study. Experience with self-paced learning is an advantage.
Remote Learning students can also attend any relevant scheduled course/s during their period of enrolment.
Closed book written assessments can be supervised using the video conferencing platform Zoom.
If assistance with any part of the course is required, students can contact the office and arrange to speak to an instructor. Questions can be discussed over the phone, by email, or, if required, tuition can be arranged.
Full fee paying Remote Learning students are given 12 months from enrolment to successfully complete all course requirements.

Online Theory Courses
The Theory components of courses may be delivered live using the video conferencing platform Zoom is COVID-19 restrictions do not allow face to face delivery. These sessions are conducted live with a trainer and allow for interaction between the instructor and students.
Supervised written assessments may be conducted online.
Practical and On Board components of courses are conducted at venues in Geelong, including aboard our 17m Training Vessel Delphinus.

Study Support
All online tuition sessions will have time allocated for questions. We encourage students to ask questions and engage with the instructor and other course participants.
Study assistance is also available over the phone during the hours detailed above, or by email.
Tuition can be provided with an instructor by attending another scheduled class or, if other means of support have not been successful, at our Geelong Office one on one (dependent on COVID restrictions).
Definitions
Online
At Marine Training Services this refers to theory sessions delivered over the computer using a video conferencing program (our program of choice is Zoom). These sessions are conducted live with a trainer and allow for interaction between the instructor and students.
Supervised written assessments can be conducted online.
Online students are required to attend practical and on board tuition and assessment sessions. These are generally conduct at venues in Geelong, including aboard our 17m Training Vessel Delphinus. Practical and on board components will be scheduled once required assignments and assessments have been completed.
Remote Learning
Refers to completing theory components in your own time, without attending online or classroom sessions.
Our Learner’s Guides have been developed to include all information required to complete the theory components of our courses. Remote Learning Students have phone and email access to instructors and can attend any scheduled online or classroom course within their enrolment period.
All online students are required to attend practical and on board tuition and assessment sessions. These are generally conduct at venues in Geelong, including aboard our 17m Training Vessel Delphinus.
Zoom
Is the video conferencing program we use to deliver online theory sessions.
Online Delivery
To participate in online theory sessions you will require:
- A computer with a working camera, microphone and speakers.
Please note, you will not be able to use your smart phone for online classes or assessments - Basic computer use knowledge
- A working email address you have access to on the computer you are using for the online sessions
- Stable internet connection
- Working printer with adequate ink/toner and paper, to print answer sheets for assessments
- Document scanner to return completed assessment answer sheets to your instructor for marking.
If you do not have a scanner, mobile phones may be used to take photos of completed answer sheets. Mobile phones are to be switched off at all other times.
Zoom – Joining Instructions
In the week prior to course commencement we will contact you to practice joining the online class using Zoom.
- You will receive an email with a link and code to join the online class.
- Click on the link in the email. When the Zoom webpage opens enter the code where indicated.
Learning Materials
Course materials will be sent by post once payment and completed enrolment forms are received.
An emailed copy and a hard copies of Learner’s Guides will be provided.
Learner’s Guide Assignment Work Books (Microsoft Word) will be emailed to course participants. These are an editable Assignment Work Books to record their answers to assignment questions. Hard copies of Assignment Work Books are also available if required.
Enrolment Duration
Fee for Service students are given 12 months to successfully complete all course requirements.
Skills First Funded students are required to demonstrate engagement in training at least once each calendar month to a maximum of 12 months. If engagement is not demonstrated in 2 consecutive months the student’s record will be marked as “Withdrawn” and their enrolment cancelled.
To demonstrate training engagement you will be required to:
- attend scheduled training; and/or,
- submit completed, revised or partially completed Learner’s Guide Assignment Work Books to MTS office for marking; and/or,
- complete supervised Assessment/s; and/or,
- arrange to attend further scheduled tuition session/s, or individual tuition with an instructor.
